Sometimes things go your way
Third round of the national interclubs was played sunday 8th of the 11th month 2009. Games are of timecontrol 2 hours for 40 moves followed by 1 hour quick play finish. With other words, a game can last for 6 hours. Indeed a long game that can give you many headaches and nervewrecking experiences.
My opponent, a 2113 rated player, and i have battled many times against eachother so i could predict his first move namely 1. Nc3 . A move i had many problems with in the past but since i decided to just play my own game against this unusual opening move my results became better and better. Helas, in this game i didn't got good out of the opening so i had to battle for a very long time in a worse position. Lucky for me my opponent went the wrong way somewhere in the game (didn't have time to analyse the game).
Here is, for your analytical pleasure, the played game.Your sharp minds will probably find many improvements for me, the little 1897 player, as for my opponent. Love to hear them!

Giving up his e-pawn isn't a mistake since he gets a huge advantage in development for it. But one can argue that instead of e4 the plan with f4 instead wasn't better.
Why did you prefer 30...Qg3 over 30...Qxh6 ?
36.b3 ? invites the plan b5, a5, b4 to attack c3 and undermine d4.
39...Bb5 and 40...Qf4 look strange. I would prefer Kxh6 immediately with advantage for black.
I think white erred with b3 and a4 should have kept d4 as an outpost for his knight by keeping the pawns on b2 and c3.
Nice game and congratulations for your upset win! :-)

"Why did you prefer 30...Qg3 over 30...Qxh6 ?"
The h6 pawn will fall anyway so i decided to go for Qg3 so the rooks will be exchanged on f7 and so my king will defend the squares of posible penetration of white.

It's a plan but it costs plenty of time and also takes away supportpoints of my bishop while white gets easier targets to attack.

I guess in my quest to exchange queens i sometimes went a bit overboard but my bishop was the most active on b5.Only minus point about Bb5 is that i give the white knight access at f5.

When I last posted I forgot to say I thought b3 was a big mistake, but I'm glad someone else said it for me. a3 looks more natural.
After b3 his pieces couldn't venture out too much because the king was subject to checks and pins.
It basically seemed like a technical win. I win as Black in the French Milner-Barry gambit probably more than any other variation in chess simply because if the person hasn't done their homework on how to carry out the attack, I simply take the pawn and win.
Perhaps an Expert would beat me, but it doesn't take away from the fact that they really should be an Expert in order to beat me with it, or have a lot of experience or preparation behind it, not simply 'general principles'.

that was a pretty nice game, jo, with a little help from your opponent... you should try some trappist westmalle before the next game you play with him, see if it makes a difference :)
Tried trappist Westmalle before, during and after a game already, didn't help. :-)
What would help is trying to learn how to concentrate, that is one of my main weaknessess.

Good game chesstiger well played.
At move move 50 i would have played 50...Bxb3,but i dont think it would make any difference to the result.
Was the pawn storm his down fall?

50. ... Bxb3 allows 51. Qd7+ that is why i preferred 51. Bf5 instead.
I think 29. Nd4 is the mistake, in my eyes there 29. Rxe6 is better. Offcourse the pawnstorm made it a little bit easier to eat those pawns up but i doubt it is the deciding factor.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned 23. h6?! giving up on opening files on the kingside. This looks like it gives up white's only plus in the position.
I'd rather sac a pawn with 23. Or 23. Qg3 pinning the knight has some merit.

23. Qg3 Rac8 and the pin is solved while black gets to develop his a-rook for free.
23. g6 fxg6 2. hxg6 h6 has indeed some chances for white if he sacrifaces on h6 i guess but nevertheless black also gets chances on the f-file with his rook like Rf6 for example playing to gain the g6 pawn or to double up the rooks on the f-file.

This is the thing. Any player can make a mistake and if your technique and endurance is up to snuff, you can get a win off it just by playing.
This is why if I play in the American Open Thanksgiving weekend, I would play up in the U2200 category. Not much to lose there, basically, and probably more skill-sharpening.
